Egypt ranks 115 in global corruption index

Egypt has been placed at 115 in an annual list of perceived corruption in 180 countries, according to the Corruption Perceptions Index, published by independent organisation Transparency International.While Egypt was ranked 105 in last year’s CPI, Transparency International emphasize that a country’s score is much more important than its ranking, since ranking can change because of the addition or exclusion of new countries in the CPI.

Official Source Denies Egyptians Involvement in Kidnapping Tourists

Official sources confirmed that the Egyptian and Sudanese authorities could not contact the armed group that kidnapped the tourists last Friday. Meanwhile, Sudan announced yesterday that the 19 hostages are alive and in good health, and the Egyptian and Sudanese forces avoid any clash that may lead to killing some of the hostages.

Sudan and Egypt said they have located the whereabouts of the 19 hostages kidnapped from Egypt Monday. Meanwhile, the kidnappers have threatened to kill the hostages if a plane search is conducted.Sudanese Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Boutros Sadiq told reporters in Khartoum that the hostages had been located, but due to the threat there was a reticence to endanger them.

Government Approves Republican Draft Decree to Set up Shanty Development Fund

In its meeting under Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif yesterday the cabinet approved a republican draft decree to set up a fund for developing shantytowns. The decree aims at giving priority to those dangerous and unsafe areas.
The cabinet decided to give priority to some 50 shantytowns nationwide to finance them within the framework of a plan for tackling the problem of shanties

Opposition parties to press criminal charges against officials over Duweiqa

A coalition of opposition parties and NGOs on Thursday formed a legal committee in preparation for initiating a lawsuit against top government figures for criminal negligence in Duweiqa.
They accused government officials including PM Ahmed Nazif, Minister of Housing Ahmed El-Magraby and Cairo Governor Abdel Azim Wazir, of criminal responsibility for the deaths of more than a 100 people buried under the rockslide in the Moqattam shantytown.

Al-Zawahri Blames Corrupt Government for Doweika Catastrophe

Ayman al-Zawahri, second in command in the Al-Qaeda organization, attributed the Doweika catastrophe, which claimed more than 100 lives, to giving up the virtue of enjoining the kindness and forbidding the evil.He held the "corrupt" government responsible for the accident.

US State Department: Egyptian Government Backtracked on Respecting Freedom of Belief

The Kefaya movement called on students and teachers to strike today, the first day of the new school year, under the slogan "Make the 20th a day for peaceful protest against policies of humiliation and degradation."George Ishaq, former coordinator of the Kefaya movement for change, told Daily News Egypt that "the strike comes in response to the worsening situation of the education scene by the failed government policies."
